Facilities

The departments of Mineralogy and Geochemistry are equipped with a number of modern analytical instruments and laboratories. The mineralogical departments have issued joined user guidelines for their facilities (pdf, in German only).

Reference materials for minerals, metals and glasses. High vacuum carbon coater (Cressington 208 Turbo). Pointlogger and Specimen Navigator. Sample holders for thin sections (28 x 48 mm) and polished sections (1 in/25 mm).

Scanning electron microscope with high-resolution Schottky field emission gun. High and low vacuum mode. EDAX Genesis EDX system. Focused ion beam (FIB) for micro-preparation of TEM samples in dual beam mode. Gas injection system for micro-deposition of platinum. Omniprobe 100 micromanipulator for in situ transfer of TEM samples.

Bruker X-ray powder diffractometer D8 ADVANCE with DAVINCI design  and Cu or Ag X-ray tube, position-sensitive LynxEye detector, and automatic 45-fold sample changer. It can be refitted for operation with an Anton Paar CHC+ reaction chamber (from -190 °C to +400 °C) and a humidity chamber (95% humidity at Tmax 80 °C) or a Göbel mirror (parallel beam) for capillary transmission experiments.
